Tell your story

Once upon a time..

In order to survive as an organization, it is important to have a good story to tell. Such a story is also called a corporate story. A bit of an 'Once upon a time...' idea, but without the fairytale aspect. Okay, I will illustrate this with an example. Everyone knows the story of Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, the Harvard student who thought it would be nice to be able to easily stay in touch with his fellow students. That is why he created the interactive platform 'The Facebook' in his student room in 2004. The young Mark probably could never have imagined what a success his platform would become, let alone that it would be the largest social network site in the world in 2015. He did not create Facebook with the idea of making it grow into the billion-dollar company it is today. No, he acted purely from his ideology: he wanted to bring people together by ensuring low-threshold interaction. Nice story, right?

Win win situation

A good story is important. Telling stories, storytelling, is a way for organizations to give meaning, transfer knowledge and express both the history and the vision of the future of the organization. It can make a complex whole understandable and bring people (both internally and externally) closer together. Stories not only appeal to reason, but also to emotion. This not only creates more sympathy for the sender of the message, but also makes the story stick better. A win-win situation!

Interactive player

As an organization, you are no longer an anonymous player who only sends information and receives no response from the public. No, anything but that. You are an interactive player with responsibilities and a voice within society. Thanks to digital media, all citizens have access to information that could have been classified as 'private' a few years ago. Because the average citizen is increasingly better informed about the organization of his or her interest, this person also feels more involved with the organization. This person is not only interested in new policy plans or mergers, but also in the story behind the organization. He or she feels the need to identify with the organization and to contribute concretely to organizational goals. Incidentally, this does not only apply to the external public, but also to the employees within the organization. For them, it is extremely important to have a clear picture of the mission and vision of an organization. A good, clear corporate story can offer this picture.
