10 Do's and Don'ts When Making Invitations

December 29, 2014 / Invitation

There are so many websites where you can make or have a card or invitation made. Often there is a choice of a number of standard designs, but nowadays you can also customize invitations with your own house style and images. But for everyone there are different do's and don'ts when it comes to making an invitationWe will list them for you.

5 do's

These 5 points are essential for creating and sending your invitation. By applying the following, the chance that your invitation will be appreciated and that your event will be well attended is greater.

1. Make the invitation attractive

That sounds rather obvious, but it is not. Don't just provide an appealing design, but also choose a striking, original text. This will help you stand out faster than when you send invitations with a standard text. Personalization is crucial, because it also strengthens the bond with your customers and relations.

2. Address the guests appropriately

This 'do' specifically focuses on the text. How you address the invitees is very important for the success of your invitation. There is a big difference between formal and informal address!

3. Hire a professional if you can't do it yourself

Not everyone is equally creative and not every website makes beautiful invitations. If you want to send a truly original invitation, hire a designer who can help you with the design. And if you can't think of a creative text, get support from a copywriter. This will significantly increase your chances of success.

4. Provide the most important information

Of course it is important to be creative with the text on the invitation, but certain information simply cannot be left out. These are of course the date, location and start of the event. But also remember that it must be clear for which type of event you are inviting someone. Is it a trade fair, a company party, or something else? If necessary, also add a program and mention a dress code if you want everyone to be dressed in a certain way. Finally, you can ask invitees to let you know whether they will be present at the event.

5. Use social media

An invitation is often very targeted, but if the type of event allows it, you can also decide to give your invitation extra power via social media. By announcing via Facebook and Twitter that you are organizing an event or are present somewhere where 'everyone' is welcome, you will reach many more people.

5 don'ts

These are mistakes you should avoid at all costs. They can have a very negative impact on the success of your event.

1. Insufficient postage

Are you sending the invitations by mail? Make sure you have enough stamps! Of course, this does not apply if you opt for digital invitations.

2. Incorrect or incomplete address list

This applies to both online and offline invitations. Are you sending the invitation via an email program with an address list? Check this list very carefully, because if there are errors in it, you will invite people you do not want to come. Or people you do want to come will miss the invitation because they are not in the list or have incorrect information. The same applies to the offline address list - always check this carefully.

3. Unclear font

Make sure you have a clearly legible font and a font size that is easy to read. That means not too small, but certainly not too big! In any case, do not decide to reduce the font size drastically at the last minute if the text does not fit completely on your invitation - this may cause people to not read the invitation at all.

4. Spelling mistakes

This is one that is pretty obvious, but spelling mistakes are still very common in professional invitations. This looks incredibly sloppy and unkempt and has a negative impact on your company's image. So make sure you have the text on the invitation checked by someone who speaks excellent Dutch.

5. No parking

If you have not arranged parking for your visitors, you should clearly indicate where they can park and whether this is paid. It can be quite a bad idea if the invitees want to visit your event by car and then find out on site that they will have to deal with sky-high parking costs. So don't forget to think about this, both in the organization and in making the invitation!
